An EKG (electrocardiogram) technician, also known as an ECG technician, is a healthcare professional responsible for operating and maintaining electrocardiogram machines. Electrocardiograms are tests that record the electrical activity of the heart over a period of time. The EKG technician plays a crucial role in assisting healthcare providers in diagnosing and monitoring cardiac conditions.
The EKG course is structured as a hybrid program, combining online and in-person components to provide a comprehensive learning experience. The online segment is self-paced, offering flexibility for students to progress through the material at their own convenience. The in-person component spans two days, allowing for hands-on training and practical application of EKG skills.
Throughout the EKG course, students cover a diverse range of topics essential for becoming proficient EKG technicians. The curriculum is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate electrocardiogram machines and contribute to the diagnosis and monitoring of cardiac conditions. The key subjects covered in the EKG course include:
This hybrid approach ensures that students receive a well-rounded education, combining the convenience of online learning with the hands-on experience and mentorship provided during the in-person sessions. Upon completion of the EKG course, students may have the option to pursue certification to validate their competency in the field of electrocardiography.
Upon successfully finishing the program, students will be prepared to undergo the national examination. A separate testing fee of $65 is necessary for both practice exams and the national exam, and the resulting certification remains valid for two years. Specifically designed for EKG technicians, this exam serves as evidence of their proficiency in electrocardiography techniques, with the potential to enhance their career opportunities in this specialized field.
EKG technicians can work in various healthcare settings where electrocardiograms (EKGs) are performed or needed. Some common work environments for EKG technicians include:
The course costs $400. This is an in-person course that spans over a duration of three days. This fee covers the provision of necessary laboratory supplies utilized in the course, along with the supply of a workbook.
